Counter-Strike 1.6 server settings reference

Counter-Strike 1.6Updated Oct 30, 20265 min read

A Counter-Strike 1.6 server on PlayNHost has ten fields on Settings, Game Settings: Server Hostname, RCON Password, Map and seven version fields for the server's add-ons. The first three apply at the next restart. The version fields apply only when the server is installed again, which you start yourself with Update and reinstall. Game rules and the join password are not here: they are in config files.

Open Game Settings

  1. Open your server in the panel and click the Settings tab.
  2. Under Server Settings on the left, click Game Settings.
  3. Click into a field, change it, and press Enter or click outside it. The panel saves at once and shows Saved. The server must restart before these take effect.
  4. Click Restart now when you are done with your changes.

The help box above the fields sums it up: Match-based - there is no world to save. The player cap is fixed at 32 in the server's own start line and is not a setting. To change settings you need the startup permission on this server.

The fields

none in a version field leaves that part out of the next install. A version field takes effect only when you click Update and reinstall: after a save the panel shows the row as Applies on reinstall and a note, "Saved. This is read while the server installs, so a restart will not apply it.", with the button Update and reinstall to apply. See How to update your Counter-Strike 1.6 server and its mods.

What do the error messages mean?

  • The value format is invalid.: the Server Hostname has a space or another character that is refused. Use hyphens: How to change your Counter-Strike 1.6 server name.
  • The value may only contain letters, numbers, and dashes.: the RCON Password or Map has another character. Underscores are fine too.
  • The value must be between 1 and 30 characters.: the RCON Password is too long.
  • The value may not be greater than 64 characters.: the Server Hostname is too long.

What are Startup Parameters and Launch Details?

  • Startup Parameters says This game does not take extra launch flags. Its start command is fixed and is built from your Game Settings, so change those instead.
  • Launch Details shows the Start command, the exact line the server starts with. On Counter-Strike 1.6 it holds +maxplayers 32 and your Map, Server Hostname and RCON Password.

Where are the other settings?

Under Config files on the left, cstrike/server.cfg is listed. Opening it says cstrike/server.cfg is not editable here yet and You can edit cstrike/server.cfg in the file manager in the meantime. Edit it on the Files tab:

At every start the panel rewrites any line of cstrike/server.cfg that starts with hostname, sv_downloadurl, sv_allowdownload or sv_allowupload, so changes to those four lines do not last. Other lines in the file stay as you write them.
