How to update your Counter-Strike 1.6 server and its mods

A Counter-Strike 1.6 server on PlayNHost gets the newest release of ReHLDS, ReGameDLL, Metamod-r, AMX Mod X, ReAPI, Reunion and ReVoice when it is installed. The version fields in Settings, Game Settings are read only during an install, so a restart does not change your versions: click Update and reinstall to install them. The panel takes a backup first and keeps your configs.

Check which versions you run

1. Open your server in the panel and click the Console tab. The badge must say Online.
2. Type version and press Enter. The line ReHLDS version: shows the engine version.
3. Type game version and press Enter. The line ReGameDLL version: shows the game library version.
4. Type amxx version and press Enter for the AMX Mod X version.
5. Type meta list and press Enter. The list shows each Metamod plugin (AMX Mod X, Reunion, ReVoice) with its version and the status RUN.

On 29 October 2026 the newest releases were ReHLDS 3.15.0.896 and ReGameDLL 5.30.0.814 (both 18 May 2026) and AMX Mod X 1.10.0, from each project's GitHub page such as ReHLDS releases.

What do the version fields in Game Settings do?

latest takes the newest release when the server is installed. none leaves that part out. After a save of Server Hostname, RCON Password or Map, the panel shows Saved. The server must restart before these take effect. The version fields are different: the row shows Applies on reinstall, and the note says "Saved. This is read while the server installs, so a restart will not apply it." with a button Update and reinstall to apply.

How do I get a new version onto my server?

1. Open Settings, which opens on Game Settings. Set the version fields, or leave them on latest for the newest releases.
2. Click Update and reinstall to apply in the note that appears after a save. You can also scroll to the Update and reinstall card at the bottom of Game Settings and click Update and reinstall.
3. Confirm. The server stops, the panel takes a backup, updates the game through Steam, then installs ReHLDS, ReGameDLL_CS, Metamod-R, AMX Mod X, ReAPI, ReUnion and ReVoice again at the versions you set. It usually takes a few minutes, and a server that was running starts again by itself.

The backup is listed on Backups as "Automatic - before update and reinstall": How to back up and restore your Counter-Strike 1.6 server. If a backup is not possible, the panel asks "Update without a backup?" and does nothing until you press Update without a backup. Only the owner and subusers with the Reinstall permission can use the button.

What does Update and reinstall keep?

These files stay as they are:

• cstrike/server.cfg, mapcycle.txt, motd.txt, banned.cfg, listip.cfg, game.cfg and game_init.cfg.
• reunion.cfg, which keeps the SteamID salt, so players without Steam keep their IDs.
• addons/revoice/revoice.cfg and addons/metamod/config.ini.
• AMX Mod X configs: users.ini, plugins.ini, amxx.cfg, maps.ini, cmds.ini, clcmds.ini, cvars.ini, configs.ini, custommenuitems.cfg, miscstats.ini, speech.ini and sql.cfg.
• Your maps and every plugin or file you added yourself.

The modules' program files are replaced, and so are AMX Mod X's core.ini, hamdata.ini and modules.ini, because they belong to the AMX Mod X version. To restore single files from the backup, see How to restore only some files or one area of your map from a backup.

Which game version does the server run?

The Half-Life Dedicated Server from Steam's steam_legacy branch, with Counter-Strike as its game. That is the build the ReHLDS project supports: its README calls it the pre-anniversary edition of HLDS, engine version 8684 or lower. The branch is fixed for this server type and is not a setting.

Can I update one AMX Mod X plugin myself?
