The welcome message, or MOTD, is the MOTD setting in Settings, Game Settings. Type your message, restart the server, and players see it when they join.
Change it
- Open your server in the panel and click the Settings tab.
- Click Game Settings.
- Type your message in MOTD and click outside the field.

- Click Restart now in the banner, or restart later. The message applies from the next start.
Limits per server type
| Server type | Default | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Terraria Vanilla | Welcome! | 128 characters. Plain letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation: no accented letters, emoji, double quotes or backslashes. |
| TShock | Welcome to my TShock server! | 60 characters, no double quotes or backslashes. |
| tModLoader | a short default message | 40 characters, no double quotes or backslashes. |
On Terraria Vanilla the panel refuses accented letters because the game would show them as code. Write the message without accents.
A longer welcome on TShock
TShock has its own, longer welcome text in the file tshock/motd.txt. Open the Files tab, go to the tshock folder and edit motd.txt. See How to upload, edit and manage your server files.
Good to know
- On Terraria Vanilla, typing
motdand a message in the Console changes it only until the next restart.motdon its own prints the current one. - To tell everyone something right now instead, use
say: How to send a message to every player on your Terraria server.
