A Necesse server on PlayNHost is for players of Necesse on Steam, which Fair Games sell for Windows, macOS and Linux. Every player needs their own copy of the game and joins from its Multiplayer menu with the server's address. The server itself needs no copy of the game and no Steam account.
Which versions of Necesse can join?
The Necesse Steam page lists Windows, macOS and Linux. All three join a dedicated server the same way: Multiplayer, Add Server, then the IP address and port: How to join your Necesse server.
As of 29 October 2026, Fair Games' site and Steam page list no console version of Necesse. On 7 October 2026 Fair Games announced a partnership with Fireshine Games, who will help with "publishing and porting". This guide will change when a new version is released.
Does each player need to own Necesse?
Yes. Each player plays on their own copy from Steam. Your PlayNHost server runs the Necesse Dedicated Server, which the panel downloads from Steam without any account when it installs the server, so you do not need a second copy for the server.
Do players need the same game version as the server?
They do after patches that Fair Games mark as needing a server update, such as 1.3.1, 1.3.2 and 1.3.3 in July and August 2026. Keep Steam Auto Update on and restart after an update: How to update your Necesse server.
Can friends join without the server owner online?
Yes. That is what a dedicated server is for: the world stays online on PlayNHost while the server runs, whether or not you are playing. To share it: How to invite friends to your Necesse server.
