How to run a private Mumble server for friends and family

Mumble and voice serversUpdated Oct 6, 20263 min read

You do not need a big setup for ten friends. This is the quick version.

Set it up in ten minutes

  1. Order the smallest voice plan. 10 slots covers most friend groups: How many slots does a voice server need.
  2. In the panel open Settings, Game Settings and set a Join Password and a Server Name. Restart the server.
  3. Connect with the Mumble app and create two or three channels such as Lobby, Game and Chill: How to create channels and set permissions in Mumble.

You do not need to set up a SuperUser password unless you want to manage permissions later.

What to send your friends

Copy this and fill in the details from your Overview page:

Join our voice server. Get the Mumble app (mumble.info or your phone's app store). Add a server: address ADDRESS, port PORT, any username, password PASSWORD. Accept the certificate the first time. Run the Audio Wizard once.

There is also a one-click link on the Connect button on Overview that opens Mumble for people who already have it.
