How to back up and restore your Mumble server

Mumble and voice serversUpdated Oct 6, 20263 min read

Your Mumble server keeps its channels, permissions and registered users in one database file, murmur.sqlite. A backup of the server includes it, plus your settings in murmur.ini.

Create a backup

  1. Open your server in the panel.
  2. Click Backups in the left menu.
  3. Create a backup and give it a name such as before-reorganising-channels.

See How to create, download and restore backups for the full page, including how many backups your plan keeps and how to download one.

When to take one

Before you rearrange the channels, before you change permissions on the root channel, and before you try a new setting. A wrong permission on the root channel can lock everyone out of the server, and a backup undoes it in one step.

Restore

  1. Stop the server.
  2. On Backups choose the backup and Restore.
  3. Start the server.

Restoring replaces the current channels and registered users with the saved ones, so anything created since the backup is gone.

Good to know

  • The SuperUser password is not in the backup. It is set in the panel and applied on every start.
  • Your own Mumble certificate lives on your computer, not on the server. Export it from Configure, Certificate Wizard and keep a copy: Mumble certificate warnings explained.
  • You can also download murmur.sqlite from Files for your own copy.
