How to add mods to your BeamMP server

BeamMPUpdated Oct 22, 20265 min read

Open the Mods & maps tab, upload your mod's .zip or paste its download link under Add a mod, then click Apply now, no restart. BeamMP sends every mod on your server to players when they join, so nobody installs anything by hand.

What a mod is on BeamMP

  • Vehicle, map and UI mods are .zip files that every player downloads. They go in the folder Resources/Client, and the Mods & maps page manages that folder for you.
  • Server plugins are Lua scripts that run on the server only. They are on the same page, under Server plugins: How to install server plugins on your BeamMP server.

Keep the mod as the .zip you downloaded. Do not unpack it.

Add a mod

  1. Open your server in the panel and click the Mods & maps tab. On a phone it is in the More menu.
  2. Under Add a mod, choose how:

    • Upload from your computer: drop one or more .zip files on the box, or click it to choose them. The box says the largest file it takes.
    • Paste a download link: paste a link that downloads the .zip itself, and click Install. The server downloads it directly.
  3. Wait until the file shows Added, or until the install card says it is installed.

Links must start with https and end in .zip, and come from GitHub, Discord or Dropbox, as a direct download link without a sign-in page. For anything else, download the .zip to your computer and upload it.

Check what the panel found

Each mod appears under Your mods. The panel looks inside every zip and shows what it holds: a map, vehicles, UI or scripts, with their names. While it reads a zip the row says Reading.

Your mods with a map mod and a vehicle mod

The row warns you when something is wrong, for example:

  • This file is not a working zip. BeamMP would still send it to every player, and their game cannot load it. Remove it and upload the mod again.
  • Everything in this zip sits inside an extra folder: BeamNG loads nothing from it. Zip the folders inside it instead.
  • This zip is empty. or No maps, vehicles, UI or scripts were found in this zip.
  • Duplicate: the same file is on the server twice, so players download it twice.

The Needs a look filter shows only the mods with a warning.

Send the mods to players

New mods reach players after Apply now, no restart in the What players download card, or at the next start.

  1. In What players download, check the line The running server has not loaded your latest changes yet.
  2. Click Apply now, no restart. The page says Mods reloaded. Players who join from now get the new set.

Players already on keep what they have until they rejoin. When the server is off, it loads the mods as they are when it starts.

Switch a mod off or remove it

Open the row's menu, Actions for the mod:

  • Switch off keeps the file on the server but stops sending it to players. Switch on brings it back.
  • Remove deletes the file. The window asks first.

Then click Apply now, no restart again, so players who join stop getting it.

Good to know

  • Every mod is downloaded by every new player, so a big pack makes the first join slow. The What players download card shows the size and the time at 25 and 100 Mbit/s: How to make players join faster on your BeamMP server.
  • A map mod also needs to be chosen as the server map: How to use a custom map on your BeamMP server.
  • Add mods a few at a time, so you know which one causes a problem.
  • Players should not copy the server's mods into their own game by hand: BeamMP sends them.
  • Uploading through Files or SFTP into Resources/Client works too, and the page shows those files the same way. BeamMP only loads files that end in .zip in lower case: the page offers Rename to .zip for a file ending in .ZIP.
  • Who may do what: adding needs the files permission Create and upload, removing Delete, switching Edit and rename: How to let a friend help run your BeamMP server.
