Restart the server. With Auto Update on, which is the default, every start checks Steam for the newest game build and installs it before the game starts. Your players' games update through Steam by themselves.
Update after a game patch
- When The Fun Pimps release an update, take a backup first if it is a big one: How to back up and restore your 7 Days to Die world.
- In the panel, click Restart.
- Watch the Console: Steam downloads the update, then the game starts. It is ready at
Connected with 7DTD server.
A daily restart keeps the server current without you thinking about it: How to restart your 7 Days to Die server on a schedule.
Hold a build for your mods
Mods are made for one game version, and an update can break them for a few days. To stay on the build you have:
- Open the Settings tab, then Game Settings, and click Show advanced.
- Switch Auto Update off.
The server then starts on the build it has. Players whose game has already updated cannot join until you update too, so switch Auto Update on again and restart as soon as your mods have caught up.
Before a big update
- Read the update notes. Major updates sometimes need a new world, and old saves can misbehave on them.
- Big updates can change
serverconfig.xml. Download your copy first and check your lines after: How to edit serverconfig.xml on your 7 Days to Die server. - Oxide is fetched again at every start, so it follows the game by itself: How to use Oxide plugins on your 7 Days to Die server.
Test builds
To run the experimental branch instead of the current release, see How to switch your 7 Days to Die server to the experimental branch.
If players see a version error, see Players see a version mismatch on your 7 Days to Die server.
