How to Change Your Ships at Sea Server Name and Settings

Ships at Sea keeps its dedicated server settings in one small file. There is not much in it, which makes it quick to get right.

Open the file

1. Start the server once so the file is created, then stop it.
2. In the panel open Files and go to:

   SAS/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/DedicatedServerSettings.ini

   The folder is named WindowsServer regardless of the host operating system, which is normal for this game.

Stop the server before editing. The file is rewritten on shutdown, so an edit made while it runs is lost.

The settings

• DedicatedServerName is what players search for in the multiplayer list. Make it unique and easy to type.
• DedicatedServerDescription is the text shown alongside it.
• MaxPlayers has a ceiling of 16, set by the game itself.

Slots

Your plan's slot count is applied through the MAX_PLAYERS variable on your server's Startup Settings page, reachable from the server overview, and applies within the game's own limit of 16. Upgrade the plan in the billing area to raise it.

What is not in the game yet

Ships at Sea does not currently have server passwords or admin commands. Password protection has been announced as coming. Until it arrives:

• An obscure server name is the only practical way to keep a server private.
• Moderation is limited to stopping and restarting the server from the panel.

This is a limitation of the game rather than of your server, and it will change as the game develops.

Do not change the ports

The port values must match the ones allocated to your server, shown on the server overview. Changing them makes the server unreachable.

Apply and verify

1. Save the file.
2. Start the server.
3. Search for the new name in the multiplayer list. If the old name is still there, the file was overwritten because the server was running when you edited it.
