The join password of a Project Zomboid server is the Join password setting in the Server Settings editor. It is not on the Game Settings page, because the panel has no password row for it. Stop the server, set the password, save, and tell your friends. Leave it empty for a server anyone can join.
Set the password
- Open your server in the panel and click the Stop button. Wait for Offline.
- Click the Settings tab, then Server Settings under Config files. If the list says No config files yet, start the server once first.
- In the Listing and joining group, find Join password and type the password.

- Click Save only, or Save & start to save and start the server in one step.
Players are asked for the password when they join. It has to match exactly, capitals included.
Change or remove it
Repeat the steps. To remove the password, clear the field and save. The server has to be stopped to save, so nobody is online while you do it, and everyone uses the new password from the next start.
Tell your friends
The Play with friends card and the invite message do not show the password for Project Zomboid. Send it yourself, in a private message. See How to invite friends to your Project Zomboid server.
Good to know
- The editor saves only while the server is stopped. If a Save button is greyed out, the server is still running.
- A password stops people who do not have it. A whitelist goes further by letting only named players make an account: How to run a whitelist-only Project Zomboid server.
- The Admin Password and the RCON Password under Game Settings are not the join password. Players never type them.
- Players asked for a password you never set? See Players are asked for a password you never set on your Project Zomboid server.
