Your Minecraft server stops because the EULA is not accepted

MinecraftUpdated Oct 28, 20264 min read

A Minecraft Java server will not run until Mojang's End User License Agreement (EULA) is accepted in a file called eula.txt. If that file is missing or says eula=false, the server prints You need to agree to the EULA in order to run the server. and stops. Accept it from the banner on Overview, or set eula=true in eula.txt, then start the server again.

What you see

  • The server goes Offline a few seconds after you start it.
  • The Console shows You need to agree to the EULA in order to run the server.
  • On Overview, a banner says Mojang’s EULA has not been accepted, with the buttons Accept and start and Dismiss. It appears when that line comes in while you have Overview open and the server is not running. Most server types have this banner; a modpack server and a Quilt server do not, so use eula.txt there.
  • On Overview and above the console, the Why your server stopped box says The Minecraft EULA has not been accepted. and Set eula=true in eula.txt, then start the server again., with the button Open in Files.

Why it happens

Accepting Mojang's EULA is part of our terms for a Minecraft server, so the panel writes eula.txt with eula=true for you when it installs your server. The message only comes back when that file was changed or removed afterwards, for example:

  • eula.txt was deleted in Files, or edited to eula=false;
  • files from another host or another computer were uploaded over the server, with their own eula.txt set to false.

Fix it from the banner

  1. Open your server in the panel. It opens on Overview.
  2. Start the server once if the banner is not there: it appears when the server prints the EULA line while Overview is open.
  3. Read the agreement. The banner links to it: Minecraft® EULA.
  4. Click Accept and start. The panel writes eula=true into eula.txt and starts the server.

Fix it in eula.txt

  1. Click Open in Files in the Why your server stopped box, or open Files and click eula.txt in the main folder.
  2. Change the line eula=false to eula=true, then click Save content.
  3. If the file is missing, click New file in the main folder, type eula=true on its own line, click Create file and name it eula.txt.
  4. Start the server.

By setting eula=true you agree to Mojang's EULA, which you can read at aka.ms/MinecraftEULA.

If it keeps coming back

  • Check that eula.txt is in the main folder, next to server.properties, and not inside another folder.
  • Your role on the server cannot change files. The banner and Files need that permission: ask the server owner.
  • If neither applies, open a ticket and include the last lines of the Console.
