MinecraftUpdated Oct 28, 20264 min read

When a server's disk is full, Minecraft cannot save the world, and the server stops with No space left on device. A full disk while saving can also damage the world. Free some space, then start the server again.

What you see

  • The Console shows No space left on device.
  • When the server has stopped, the Why your server stopped box on Overview and above the console says The server ran out of disk space. and Delete old logs, unused worlds or files you no longer need, then start it again. A full disk can also damage the world being saved. Its button is Open in Files.
  • Before it gets that far, Overview may show a yellow card, Disk is running out on this server, which says on how many of the last days the disk went above 85% of the limit. Its buttons are Add more disk and See the usage.

Free space

Delete what you no longer need, largest first:

  1. Worlds you do not play. Open Modding, then Worlds, then Your worlds. Each world shows its size. Download one first if you may want it back, then choose Delete world in its menu. See How to switch to another world on your Minecraft server.
  2. Archives you already unpacked. A .zip or .tar.gz you uploaded and unzipped is still there. Delete it in Files.
  3. Old logs and crash reports. The logs and crash-reports folders in Files. The server writes new ones.
  4. Instances you no longer use. Each instance keeps its own files. Delete one on Instances with Delete this instance. See How to use instances on your Minecraft server.
  5. Land nobody visits. A big explored world can be made smaller: How to trim unused chunks from your Minecraft world.

Then start the server and check the Console.

See what uses the space

On Overview, open the Storage tab of the Usage card for the trend. Your worlds on the Worlds tab shows the size of each world. Backups are stored separately and do not fill your server's disk.
