How to Become an Admin on Your Wreckfest Server

WreckfestUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Wreckfest admins are managed from the server console. Adding one there is written out and survives a restart, so there is normally no config editing to do.

Find the Steam ID

You need the SteamID64, the 17 digit number beginning 7656119. Read it from a Steam profile URL or use a SteamID lookup site.

Add an admin

  1. Start the server and open the Console section in the panel.
  2. Run the admin command for your build. help lists the exact syntax the server supports, which is worth checking because the command names have changed between Wreckfest versions.
  3. The change is written out and persists across restarts.

The panel console is itself the highest level of control. Anything the server accepts can be typed there without being in game, which makes it the fastest route for a kick or an event change.

Commands worth knowing

  • help lists every command your build supports. Start here.
  • tracks prints the internal track names, which is what the config and the change commands expect.
  • Player listing, kick and ban, by name or Steam ID.
  • Changing the current track and game mode.
  • Starting or restarting the event.
  • Sending a message to everyone on the server.

In-game admin

An admin who is connected gets the host controls in the lobby, which cover starting the event, changing the track and managing players without going to the console.

Keeping control of a public server

  • Use enable_track_vote deliberately. With it on, players decide the rotation, which is popular but takes the choice out of your hands.
  • Set a welcome_message with your rules. It is the only text every player definitely reads.
  • Bans made from the console persist. Review them occasionally rather than letting the list grow forever.

If a command is not recognised

  • Run help in the panel console. It is authoritative for your build, and Wreckfest's command names have changed over time.
  • The server must be running for the console to accept anything.
  • Track names in commands must be the internal names from tracks, not the names shown in game.
