Open Worlds in the left menu, open the menu of the world, and choose Download. The panel packs the world folder as it was last saved and your browser downloads it as a .tar.gz file. Windows 11 and macOS open it directly; on Windows 10, use 7-Zip.
Download a world
- Open your server in the panel and click Worlds in the left menu.
- On Your worlds, click the menu at the end of the world's row (Actions for the world).
- Choose Download.

A message says Your download of the world has started: a .tar.gz of the world folder. The file is named after the world and the time.
The download holds the world as the game last saved it. For the very latest state, stop the server first, or wait for the next save.
Play it on your own PC
- Open the
.tar.gzfile. Inside is a folder named after the world. Copy that folder, with every file in it, into your PC's
worlds_localfolder:- Windows:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_local\ - Linux:
~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local/
- Windows:
- Start Valheim and pick the world.
A world played with mods may behave oddly without them.
Other ways
- A panel backup holds every world, your lists and your mods: Backups, Start backup, then Download in the backup's menu. See How to back up and restore your Valheim world.
- A copy from the Rewind timeline cannot be downloaded on its own. Rewind to it first, download, then undo.
If the download does not start
The server could not pack that world. Check that it has free disk space, then try again.Free some space, for example old worlds, then try again.- The Download item is missing: you need the Read contents and Compress and extract permissions.
Keep a copy
A copy on your PC is the best protection against a mistake. Download one before you change server type, install mods or delete a world. See How to delete a Valheim world or start fresh.
