Your Factorio server shows Matching server connection failed: Missing token

FactorioUpdated Nov 3, 20263 min read

Matching server connection failed followed by Error when creating server game: Missing token. in a PlayNHost Factorio console only means the server could not list itself in Factorio's public server browser, because it has no factorio.com token. The server runs normally and players join with Connect to address. Add your factorio.com details to be listed, or switch Public off to silence it.

What the Console shows

Hosting game at IP ADDR:({0.0.0.0:25568})
Error ServerMultiplayerManager.cpp:743: Matching server connection failed:
Error when creating server game: Missing token.

Hosting game at comes first: the game is up and the badge is Online. The error is about the public list only.

Fix 1: list the server

  1. Get your username and token at factorio.com/profile.
  2. Enter them in Server Username and Server Token (Settings, Game Settings), or on the Finish setting up your server card on Overview.
  3. Restart the server. The error is gone and the server shows in Browse public games.

Fix 2: do not list the server

  1. On the Settings page, click server-settings.json under Config files.
  2. Switch Public off under Where the server is listed.
  3. Click Save & restart.

The server no longer tries to list itself. Players join by address, and a Server password keeps strangers out.

Still there after adding the token?

  • Check Server Username is your factorio.com account name and Server Token is the token, not your password. The token field only takes English letters and numbers, so a pasted space or quote is refused.
  • Set both: a token without a username does nothing.
