How to Change Your Windrose Server Name and Password

Windrose keeps its server settings in ServerDescription.json. There is one rule that matters more than any individual setting.

Edit only when the server is fully shut down

Windrose can reset fields in this file to defaults if it is touched while the server is starting or running, and that includes the invite code. So:

1. Stop the server from the panel.
2. Wait until it reports it is fully offline.
3. Edit the file.
4. Start the server.

The settings

In the panel open Files and open ServerDescription.json:

• Server name, how the server identifies itself.
• Password protected, a true or false flag. Set it to false to remove password protection entirely.
• Password, used when the flag above is true.
• Region, which affects how the server presents itself to players.
• Player count, the maximum number of players connected at once.
• Invite code, generated when the server was created. This is what players use to join, so note it before changing anything else.
• Save behaviour, controlling how and how often the world is written out.

It is JSON, so a missing comma or brace stops the server loading. The panel console names the problem.

Slots

Your plan's slot count is applied through the MAX_PLAYERS variable on your server's Startup Settings page, reachable from the server overview. Raising the player count in the JSON alone does not add slots. Upgrade the plan in the billing area to run more players.

Do not change the port

The port value must match the one allocated to your server, shown on the server overview.

World settings are a separate file

Difficulty and gameplay parameters belong to the world and live in WorldDescription.json, deeper in the save path. See our guide on Windrose world settings.

Apply and verify

1. Save the file.
2. Start the server.
3. Read the panel console, then try the invite code. If a field has gone back to a default, the server was not fully shut down when you edited.
