How to update your modpack on your Minecraft server

MinecraftUpdated Oct 28, 20265 min read

When a newer version of your modpack is out, open Modding, then Modpacks, and click Installed. A card says which version is out and offers Update to that version. The panel stops the server, takes a backup, installs the new version and keeps your world. If the new version causes trouble, Roll back puts the backup back.

Before you update

  • Read the card. If it says This version is for Minecraft <version>. A world opened on a newer Minecraft cannot go back except by rolling back to the backup., the update also moves your world to a newer Minecraft.
  • Open What changed to read the pack's own notes.
  • Tell your players: they need the new pack version too. See How to get your players ready for a modded Minecraft server.

Update the pack

  1. Open your server in the panel, click the Modding tab, then Modpacks, then Installed.
  2. The card says, for example, <pack> 1.5 is out. This server runs 1.4. A Beta badge marks a version that is not a full release.
  3. Read the note: The server stops, a backup is taken, then the new version installs. Your world, your server settings and the mods you switched off are kept. Mods you added yourself are removed and changes to mod configs are replaced. The backup keeps both for 7 days.
  4. Click Update to and the version.
  5. The card follows the steps: The update is waiting to start., Stopping the server and taking a backup first., then Installing <version>. The world is kept.
  6. When it is done, the card says Updated from <old> to <new>. and until when the backup is kept.

Only the server owner can update, roll back or keep a version.

Keep it or roll back

After an update the card offers two buttons until the backup expires:

  • Keep this version: you keep the update, and the card stops offering the rollback. Click it only once you are sure.
  • Roll back to the old version: the panel asks Roll back to <old>? and warns This restores the backup taken at <time>. Everything that happened on the server since then, builds and progress included, is lost. Click Roll back. The card shows Restoring the backup and going back to <old>.

If mods you added yourself are not in the new version, the card lists them: Not in the new version: <files>. If you added these yourself, install them again from Mods. The backup still has them.

When no backup can be taken

If your plan has no backup slots, or every slot is in use, the panel warns before it starts, in a window Update without a backup?. Without a backup the update cannot be rolled back. To keep the rollback, click Cancel, delete an old backup to free a slot, and update again. Update anyway goes ahead without one. See How to create, download and restore backups.

Packs the panel cannot check

  • Technic and Void's Wrath packs: the card says This modpack source does not publish versions the panel can compare, so updates cannot be checked here. To move to a newer version, install the pack again from Modpacks, which replaces the server. Back up first. See How to install a modpack on your Minecraft server.
  • The modpack source did not answer. Try again in a moment.: reload the page later.
  • <pack> is up to date (<version>).: there is nothing newer.

If the update fails

The card says The update to <version> did not finish. with the reason. Your backup from before the update is kept. Read the Console, and if the server does not start, roll back or restore the backup. If you need help, open a ticket with the pack's name and both versions. See How to open a support ticket.
