How to turn on keep inventory on your Minecraft server

MinecraftUpdated Oct 28, 20263 min read

Keep inventory is a Minecraft game rule. Open the Settings tab, click Game Rules, switch Keep inventory on and click Save. Players then keep their items and experience when they die, straight away, with no restart.

Turn it on in the panel

  1. Open your server in the panel and click the Settings tab.
  2. Under Config files, click Game Rules. On a new server, start it once first so it has a world.
  3. Type keep in the search box at the top.
  4. Switch Keep inventory on. Its key is keep_inventory on recent versions and keepInventory on older ones.
  5. Click Save. The page says Game rules saved.
The Game Rules page searched for keep, with Keep inventory switched on

To turn it off again, switch it off and click Save.

Or with a command

In the Console, without a slash:

gamerule keep_inventory true

On Minecraft versions before 1.21.11, the rule is written keepInventory. In the game, an operator of level 2 or more types the same command with a slash.

Good to know

  • Keep inventory is off by default in a new world.
  • It belongs to the world: a new or different world has its own setting. Turn it on again after you reset or switch the world.
