Xonotic is a free arena shooter on the DarkPlaces engine, started by the community that left Nexuiz. DarkPlaces dedicated servers advertise themselves to the master list by default, so players find yours in the in-game browser or type its IP and port. Windows, Linux and macOS players share one server.

CUSTOM .PK3 MAPS AND CVARS

Custom maps ship as .pk3 files: upload them to .xonotic/data over SFTP, then run fs_rescan so the server sees them. Mutators and game settings are cvars in .xonotic/data/server.cfg, which a reinstall keeps. Setting sv_curl_defaulturl there gives players an HTTP download for missing maps. Nothing beyond stock Xonotic is preinstalled.

Is the player limit enforced, and do spectators count?
Yes to both. Max Players is passed to the server as +maxplayers, and the panel refuses any value above your plan's 16, 24 or 32 slots. Xonotic counts spectators and bots in that number, so a 16-slot server holds 16 in total, playing or watching. You can lower it with Edit Player Slots.
Do I need to own anything to play?
No, Xonotic is entirely free and open source for both the server and every client.
Which Xonotic version does the server run?
The newest autobuild. The install downloads the 0.8.6 release and then syncs to the latest autobuild, which Xonotic describes as its beta channel; the Version field does not pin an older build. Players on 0.8.6 can still join, because Xonotic downloads the server's game logic when they connect. There is no update at start, and a reinstall syncs again.
