Project Zomboid admin is attached to the account name you created when you first joined the server, not to Steam. So join once, then promote that account.
Step 1: join and create your account
Connect to the server and pick an account name and password at the join screen. The account exists on the server from that moment.
Step 2: promote it from the panel console
- With the server running, open the Console section in the panel.
- Run:
grantadmin "YourAccountName" - The console confirms the change. Disconnect and rejoin for it to take effect.
To take admin away again:
removeadmin "YourAccountName"
Access levels below admin
Project Zomboid has more than one rank. From the panel console:
setaccesslevel "AccountName" moderator
Accepted levels are admin, moderator, overseer, gm, observer and none. Moderator covers kicks and bans without full world editing.
Using admin in game
Once you are an admin, rejoin and you will see an extra button on the left of the screen that opens the admin panel. From there you can:
- Manage players, teleport, heal, kick and ban.
- Change sandbox options live.
- Spawn items and vehicles.
- Toggle invisible, godmode, noclip and see the zombie population.
Chat commands work too, typed with a leading slash, for example /kickuser "name", /banuser "name", /servermsg "text" and /players.
Useful console commands
playerslists everyone online with their account names.saveforces a world save. Run this before a manual stop.quitsaves and shuts down cleanly.checkModsNeedUpdatereports whether a workshop mod has changed since the server started.
If grantadmin does not work
- The account has to exist. Join the server once before running the command.
- Account names are case sensitive and must be quoted exactly as typed at the join screen.
- You must rejoin. The access level is read when you connect.
