How to change your Minetest server name and settings

MinetestUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Minetest reads its settings from minetest.conf. Each line is a setting, an equals sign and a value.

1. Open the file

  1. Stop the server in the Game Panel.
  2. Open the Files tab and click minetest.conf. Create it in the server root if it does not exist.

2. The settings you will change

SettingWhat it does
server_nameThe name shown in the public list.
server_descriptionOne line about the server.
motdThe message players see when they join.
max_usersPlayer slots.
server_announcetrue lists the server publicly, false keeps it address only.
default_privsThe privileges every new player starts with.
nameThe account that gets full admin privileges.
creative_modeTurns creative mode on or off.
enable_damageTurns player damage on or off.
portAlready set to your allocation. Leave it alone.

3. Default privileges

default_privs takes a comma separated list, for example interact, shout. Removing interact makes new players unable to build until you grant it, which is a simple way to run a whitelisted server.

4. Save and restart

  1. Save the file.
  2. Start the server and read the console for the world and game it loaded.

5. World settings are separate

The world folder has its own world.mt file that records which game the world uses and which mods are enabled. World specific settings belong there, and changing the game in world.mt on an existing world will not convert it. Start a new world instead.

If a setting has no effect, check the spelling. Minetest ignores names it does not recognise without an error.
