How to add workshop maps to your Killing Floor 2 server

Killing Floor 2Updated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Killing Floor 2 downloads workshop content itself. You list the workshop item IDs in the engine config and add the map names to the rotation.

1. Collect the workshop IDs

  1. Open each map's Steam Workshop page.
  2. The number at the end of the address is the item ID.
  3. Note the map name as well, exactly as the author wrote it. That is what goes in the rotation.

2. Subscribe the server

  1. Stop the server in the Game Panel.
  2. Open the Files tab and go to KFGame/Config.
  3. Open the KFEngine config file and find the workshop section.
  4. Add one ServerSubscribedWorkshopItems line per map, each with a workshop ID.
  5. Save the file.

3. Add the map to the rotation

  1. Open the KFGame config file.
  2. Find the map cycle for the game mode you run.
  3. Add the map name to the cycle, keeping the exact spelling from the workshop page.
  4. Add a map entry for it as well, so the game knows the map exists.

4. Start and check

  1. Start the server and read the Console. Each workshop item is downloaded before the map loads, so the first start after adding maps is slow.
  2. If a map never appears in the rotation, the name in the cycle does not match the name of the map file that was downloaded.

5. What your players see

  • Clients download the map from the workshop when the server switches to it.
  • Players who subscribe to the same maps in advance have a much shorter wait.
  • After a workshop update, restart the server so it takes the new version.

Add maps a few at a time and restart in between. Open a ticket from Support in the Client Area with the console output if a map will not download.
