How to manage saves on your Astroneer server

AstroneerUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Astroneer keeps every world as a save file on the server. Switching worlds is a matter of pointing the server at a different one.

1. Find the saves

  1. Open the Files tab in the Game Panel.
  2. Browse to Astro/Saved/SaveGames.
  3. Each world is a save file whose name starts with the descriptive name you gave it, followed by a timestamp.

2. Switch to a different save

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Note the descriptive part of the save name, without the timestamp.
  3. Open AstroServerSettings.ini in the config folder and set ActiveSaveFileDescriptiveName to that name.
  4. Save and start the server.

3. Download a copy to your PC

  1. Stop the server so the save is not being written while you copy it.
  2. In the Files tab, use the download option on the save file.
  3. Keep it somewhere safe. A downloaded save is the only backup that survives a mistake on the server.

4. Upload an existing world

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Upload the save file into Astro/Saved/SaveGames.
  3. Set ActiveSaveFileDescriptiveName to match the descriptive part of the uploaded file.
  4. Start the server and check the console for the save it loaded.

5. Start a fresh world

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Download the current save first if it matters to you.
  3. Set ActiveSaveFileDescriptiveName to a name that does not exist yet.
  4. Start the server. It creates a new world and leaves the old files untouched.

Nothing is deleted by switching saves, so this is always reversible. Deleting files in the panel is not, so download before you delete.
