How to host Muse, a self-hosted Discord music bot

Discord bot hostingUpdated Oct 6, 20263 min read

Muse is a music bot meant for small and medium Discord servers. It uses slash commands, so people type /play instead of a prefix.

Before you start

  1. Create the bot and copy its token: How to create a Discord bot and get its token.
  2. Invite it with the bot and applications.commands scopes and the Connect, Speak and Send Messages permissions: How to invite your Discord bot to a server.
  3. Get a YouTube API key from Google's developer console (create a project and enable the YouTube Data API). Muse uses it to search.
  4. Optional: for Spotify links, create an app on Spotify's developer dashboard and copy its Client ID and Client Secret.

Choose the type and fill in the settings

  1. On a new bot server click Edit Server Type on Overview and choose Muse. This reinstalls the server and by default deletes its files.
  2. Open Settings, Game Settings: enter Discord Bot Token and YouTube API Key, and the Spotify fields if you want them. Leave Release Version Tag as latest unless the project tells you to pin a version.

Start and use it

Open Console and start the server. The first start downloads and prepares Muse, so it takes longer. Once the bot is online, join a voice channel and use /play with a song name or link. Other commands include /queue, /skip, /pause and /volume.

Good to know

  • Give Muse 1 GB of memory or more.
  • YouTube changes often and can break any bot that streams from it. If playback stops after working, check the project's page for the current status before changing anything.
  • Slash commands can take a moment to show the first time. See Discord bot online but not responding.
