How to Change Windrose World Settings and Difficulty

Windrose separates the server from the world it is running. The server settings decide who can join. The world settings decide what the game is like once they are in.

Find the file

1. Stop the server and wait until the panel reports it is fully offline.
2. In the panel open Files and find WorldDescription.json. It lives deeper in the save path than the server config, inside the world's own folder, so use the file manager's search if you do not see it.

The difficulty preset

Windrose ships presets, typically Easy, Medium and Hard. Setting the preset is the simplest way to change how demanding the world is, and it adjusts several underlying values at once.

Custom parameters

Below the preset, the same file carries the individual gameplay parameters. Setting these lets you build a ruleset the presets do not offer, for example a world with generous resources but dangerous combat.

Change one value at a time and play a session between changes. It is much easier to undo one change than to work out which of five was wrong.

These belong to the world

Because these settings live inside the save rather than in the server config, they follow the world. Starting a new world gives you a fresh set, and restoring an old save restores its settings too.

Back up before you change anything

1. Stop the server and wait for it to report offline, so the world is fully written.
2. In Files, download the world folder, including WorldDescription.json.

Apply and verify

1. Save the file. It is JSON, so every brace and comma has to be right.
2. Start the server.
3. Read the panel console. A JSON error stops the world from loading and the message names the file.
4. Join and confirm the change is visible.

If a change does nothing

• Confirm you edited the WorldDescription.json inside the world the server actually loads. A server with more than one world on disk is easy to edit in the wrong place.
• Confirm the server was fully shut down when you edited. Windrose can reset fields that are touched while it is running.
• Some parameters only apply when a world is generated. Those need a new world.
