How to Become an Admin on Your Sons of the Forest Server

Sons of the Forest gives admin two ways. A password anyone can use to log in for a session, and an owner list that grants admin automatically every time those players connect.

Method 1: the admin password

1. Stop the server.
2. In the panel open Files and edit dedicatedserver.cfg.
3. Set:

   "AdminPassword": "a-long-password-here",

   Keep the JSON valid, with the comma if it is not the last entry.
4. Save and start the server.
5. Join the server, open chat and enter:

   /adminlogin a-long-password-here

You now have admin for this session. Rejoining means logging in again.

Method 2: the owner list

To have admin granted automatically, add SteamID64 values to the server's owner list. Depending on your server's version this is either an Owners array inside dedicatedserver.cfg or a plain text file named ownerswhitelist.txt beside it, with one 17 digit ID per line.

Check which one your server has before editing. Whichever it is, stop the server, add the ID, and start it again.

Using admin in game

Once logged in, the player list gives you kick, ban and teleport options. The admin actions are:

• Kick a player from the current session.
• Ban a player, which persists.
• Teleport to a player, useful for dealing with a report.
• Promote another connected player to admin for the session.

From the panel console

The panel Console section is attached to the server process, so server commands can be typed there without joining. Use it to force a save before stopping the server.

If the login is refused

• The password is case sensitive and must match the config exactly.
• If you edited the config while the server was running, the shutdown write overwrote it. Stop first, then edit.
• Check the JSON is still valid. A broken file makes the server fall back to defaults or refuse to start, and the console says which.
