How to Install Mods on Your Necesse Server

Necesse mods are single .jar files. The server loads them from one folder, and every player has to run the same set at the same versions.

Get the mods

Necesse mods come from the Steam Workshop and from the community mod listings. Whichever source you use, you need the .jar file itself to put on the server, and the matching mod on each client.

Check the mod's supported game version. Necesse mods break on game updates more often than most games, because they hook directly into the game code.

Install them

1. Stop the server.
2. In the panel open Files and go to the mods folder in the server's data directory. Create it if it does not exist.
3. Upload the .jar files.
4. Start the server.
5. Read the panel console. Each mod is logged as it loads, with its name and version.

Every player needs the same mods

Necesse checks the mod list at connect time. A player missing a mod, or running a different version of one, is refused with a message naming the mismatch. Publish your exact list and versions somewhere your players can read, and update everyone at the same time.

Steam Workshop mods are installed on the client by subscribing. Manual mods go into the client's own mods folder.

Back up before you change anything

Mods add items, blocks and creatures to the world. Removing one later can leave gaps in a save. Before installing or removing:

1. Stop the server.
2. In Files, download the world from the save folder.

Removing a mod

1. Stop the server.
2. Delete the .jar from the mods folder.
3. Start the server and check the console for errors as the world loads.

If the world will not load, put the mod back and restore your backup. Then plan the removal on a fresh world instead.

After a game update

A Necesse update usually stops mods loading until the authors rebuild them. If the server fails to start after an update, move the mods out of the folder, confirm the server runs clean, and add them back as updates land.

If a mod does not load

• Check the console. It names the mod and the reason.
• Confirm the file is a .jar and was not unzipped.
• Confirm the mod supports your game version.
• Install one mod at a time when you are diagnosing a problem.
