A Discord bot is a program. It has to run on a computer that is switched on and connected to the internet for as long as you want the bot online. Discord bot hosting is renting that computer, set up for bots.
Why not just use my PC?
You can, while you are building it. But the bot goes offline when the PC sleeps, restarts or loses its connection, and anyone using it notices. A host keeps it running all day. See Host a Discord bot on your PC or on a bot server.
What you get
On a PlayNHost bot server:
- A server that runs your code all day and restarts it after a crash
- A Console to see the bot's output, and Files and SFTP to upload your code
- Your choice of Node.js, Python, Java or a ready-made music or general bot
- A database, backups and graphs of CPU, memory and storage
- Protection against attacks on the network
