How to manage worlds and backups on your Foundry server

FoundryUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

A Foundry server keeps each world in its own folder and loads the one named in App.cfg. Switching between them is a config change, not a deletion.

1. Find the saves

  1. Stop the server in the Game Panel.
  2. Open the Files tab and find the save folder for the server. Each world is a folder named after its world name.

2. Switch world

  1. Note the exact folder name of the world you want.
  2. Open App.cfg and set server_world_name to match it.
  3. Start the server and check the console for the world it loaded.

3. Download a copy

  1. Stop the server so nothing is being written.
  2. Download the world folder from the Files tab.
  3. Keep it off the server. A copy that only exists on the server is not a backup.

Do this before a game update, before a large change and before anything you are unsure about.

4. Upload a single player world

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Find your local Foundry save on your PC, under your user profile.
  3. Upload the world folder into the server's save folder, matching the structure of what is already there.
  4. Set server_world_name to that folder name and start the server.

5. Rules that avoid lost factories

  • Always stop the server before copying a world. A save copied while it is being written is often unusable.
  • Never delete a world to start fresh. Change the world name instead.
  • Use Stop rather than Kill so the server writes a final save.
  • Set autosave_interval to something you can live with losing.

Open a ticket from Support in the Client Area if a world will not load, and tell us the world name you expect.
