How to Become an Admin on Your Valheim Server

Valheim admin is granted by a plain text file on the server. There is no in-game promotion command, so this is a file edit followed by a restart.

Find your SteamID64

You need the 17 digit number that starts with 7656119, not your display name. Open your Steam profile page and read it from the URL, or use any SteamID lookup site with your profile link.

If your server runs with crossplay, players who joined from another platform have a PlayFab ID instead. It is printed in the panel console when they connect.

Edit the admin list

1. Stop the server.
2. In the panel open Files and navigate to:

   .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/adminlist.txt

3. Add one ID per line, nothing else:

   76561198000000000
   76561198000000001

4. Save the file and start the server.

Two sibling files work the same way. bannedlist.txt blocks the IDs listed in it, and permittedlist.txt turns the server into an allow list when it has any entries in it, so leave it empty unless that is what you want.

Enable the in-game console

1. In Steam, right click Valheim and choose Properties.
2. In Launch Options add -console.
3. Start the game and join the server.
4. Press F5 to open the console.

Admin commands worth knowing

• help lists everything available to you.
• kick [name or id] and ban [name or id].
• unban [id].
• banned lists current bans.
• save forces an immediate world save. Worth running before you stop the server manually.
• info shows server performance figures.

Cheat commands such as god and fly are separate and are disabled on dedicated servers unless the server was started with cheats allowed. Moderation commands do not need cheats.

If admin does not take effect

• The server must be restarted. The list is read at startup.
• Check for stray spaces or blank characters around the ID. One ID per line, nothing else.
• Make sure you edited the file under .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/ and not a copy elsewhere in the file tree.
