How to Install Steam Workshop Mods on Your Operation: Harsh Doorstop Server

Operation: Harsh DoorstopUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Operation: Harsh Doorstop has full Steam Workshop support, and mods are a genuine part of the game rather than an afterthought. Installing one means getting the files onto the server and telling the server to use its content.

Find the workshop IDs

Open the mod's Steam Workshop page. The ID is the numeric value at the end of the URL. Note the ID for every mod you want, and for anything the mod page lists as a requirement.

Get the mods onto the server

Mods live in:

HarshDoorstop/Mods/

There are two ways to fill that folder:

  • Let the server download them. Set the workshop IDs in the mod list on your server's Startup Settings page, reachable from the server overview. The server fetches them at startup, which is why the first start after a change takes much longer.
  • Upload them yourself. Subscribe on your own machine, find the downloaded folder under Steam's workshop content for the game, and upload it into HarshDoorstop/Mods/ over SFTP. This is the practical route for very large mods.

Either way, watch the panel console. It logs mods as they load and names anything that fails.

Put mod maps into rotation

Installing a map mod does not make the server play it. Stop the server, edit:

HarshDoorstop/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Game.ini

and add the mod's map names to the rotation, exactly as the mod page lists them. A misspelled map name is skipped and reported in the console at startup.

Your players need the mods too

Anything that adds maps, weapons or factions has to be present on the client. Subscribing to the workshop items is what does that. Publish your mod list with links so nobody is left behind at the next map change.

After a game update

Mods usually need rebuilding after a patch. If the server crashes on a modded map after an update, take that map out of the rotation until the mod author publishes a new version.

Removing a mod

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Remove its maps from the rotation in Game.ini first.
  3. Delete its folder from HarshDoorstop/Mods/, and remove its ID from the mod list on the Startup Settings page so it is not downloaded again.
  4. Start the server.

Deleting the files while a mod map is still in the rotation gives you a server that fails at the next map change.
