How to add maps and mods to your Mindustry server

MindustryUpdated Sep 23, 20263 min read

Mindustry loads custom content from two folders inside its config directory. Uploading a file and restarting is all it takes.

1. Add a custom map

  1. Export or download the map as a .msav file.
  2. Open the Files tab in the Game Panel and go to config/maps.
  3. Upload the file there.
  4. In the Console tab, run reloadmaps, then maps to confirm it is listed.
  5. Host it with host <mapname> survival, using the name shown by maps.

2. Add a mod

  1. Download the mod as a .zip or .jar file.
  2. Stop the server.
  3. Upload the file into config/mods.
  4. Start the server and read the console. Each mod is named as it loads, and an error names the mod that failed.
  5. Run mods in the console to list what is loaded.

3. What your players need

  • Mods that add blocks, units or items must be installed by every player as well, or they cannot join.
  • Mods that only change server behaviour do not need anything from the client.
  • Everyone should be on the same mod versions. A mismatch is reported to the player when they try to connect.

4. Removing content

  • Stop the server, delete the file from config/mods or config/maps, and start it again.
  • Removing a content mod can break a save that used its blocks. Keep a copy of the save first.

5. If a map or mod does not appear

  • Check the file went into the right folder and kept its extension.
  • Run reloadmaps for maps, and restart the server for mods.
  • Check the mod supports your Mindustry version. The console says so when it does not.

Open a ticket from Support in the Client Area with the console output if content will not load.
