Mumble overlay and positional audio for games

Two Mumble features suit gaming groups: an overlay that shows who is talking, and positional audio that makes teammates sound as if they are where they stand in the game.

Overlay

The overlay draws a small list of talking users over your game window. Open Configure, Settings, Overlay, switch it on and choose how it looks and where it sits. It works with games running in a window or borderless window mode on supported systems. Some games, anti-cheat systems and platforms block overlays. If it does not appear, try a different window mode, run the game and Mumble with the same privileges, and update both.

Positional audio

With positional audio, Mumble reads your position from the game and plays teammates' voices from their direction and distance. It needs a plugin for the game.

  1. Open Configure, Settings, Plugins.
  2. Switch on Link to Game and Transmit Position, then enable the plugin for your game in the list.
  3. Everyone in the channel needs the plugin enabled, or the effect does not work for them.

The list of supported games is in the Mumble app, and it is not the same for every game, so check it for yours. Positional audio also needs stereo headphones to be useful.

Other things to know

  • Channels where people are linked should share a game and server so positions make sense.
  • It makes no difference to the server's load.
  • Voice quality settings still apply: How to improve Mumble voice quality.
