How to change your Mumble server name and welcome message

Mumble and voice serversUpdated Oct 6, 20263 min read

Two settings control how your server introduces itself.

Server name

The Server Name is the name shown at the top of the channel list in Mumble.

  1. Open your server in the panel, then Settings, Game Settings.
  2. Fill in Server Name (letters, numbers, spaces, dot, dash and underscore).
  3. Restart the server.

The console may print a harmless note about public registration. Your server is private and is not listed anywhere, so you can ignore it.

Welcome message

The Welcome Message is the text shown in the chat window when someone connects. Basic HTML works:

`` Welcome to Alex's clan!<br />Rules: be kind, no spam.<br /><a href="https://example.com">Our website</a> ``

  • Use <br /> for a new line.
  • Use <b>bold</b> and <a href="...">link</a>.
  • It has to be on a single line in the panel.
  • The message is limited to a few hundred characters.

Restart the server after changing it. See How to start, stop, restart and force-stop your server.

Show rules in a channel instead

For longer rules, put them in the description of a channel: right-click it, Edit, and write the text. Users see it when they hover or open the channel. See How to create channels and set permissions in Mumble.
