Longvinter server settings are not applying

LongvinterUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Longvinter problems are almost always the config file. Work through these in order.

1. The setting reverts after a restart

  • Stop the server before editing. Longvinter writes its config on shutdown, so edits made while it runs are overwritten.
  • Wait for the panel to report the server is offline, not just that you clicked stop.
  • Save the file, then start the server.

2. The setting is ignored

  • Each setting has to be under its own section header in Game.ini. The server identity and the gameplay rules live under different headers, and a line under the wrong one is skipped with no error.
  • Check for a typo in the setting name. Unknown names are ignored.
  • Read the console during boot for the values the server actually loaded.

3. The password does not work

  • Longvinter accepts letters and numbers in the password. Anything else can stop it working.
  • Check for a trailing space.
  • Restart after changing it.

4. The server is not in the browser

  • Give it a few minutes after a start.
  • Check ServerName is set and distinctive enough to search for.
  • Have a player try a direct join with IP:Port to prove the server itself is reachable.

5. Players are refused

  • Check MaxPlayers.
  • Restart the server after a game update so it matches the clients.
  • A player on an older build cannot join.

6. The island lost progress

  • The world is written on a clean shutdown. Use Stop rather than Kill.
  • Download a copy of the save folder from the Files tab before any large change.

Open a ticket from Support in the Client Area with the last 50 lines of console output if none of this fits.
