How to become an admin on your Garry's Mod server

Garry's Mod has two levels of admin. Rcon is built in and controls the server. An admin addon such as ULX gives you an in game menu and per person ranks.

1. Set the rcon password

1. Stop the server and open garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg in the Files tab.
2. Set rcon_password "a-long-secret".
3. Save and start the server.

Anyone with this password controls the server completely. Never give it to a player.

2. Use rcon

1. Join the server and open the console with ~.
2. Run rcon_password a-long-secret.
3. Then run commands with the rcon prefix, for example rcon status, rcon changelevel gm_construct or rcon kickid.

The Console tab in the Game Panel runs the same commands without a prefix or password.

3. Install ULX and ULib

1. Stop the server.
2. Download ULib and ULX. They are two separate addons and you need both.
3. In the Files tab, upload each into garrysmod/addons so you have garrysmod/addons/ulib and garrysmod/addons/ulx.
4. Start the server and check the console for both addons loading.

4. Promote yourself

1. Join the server.
2. In the Console tab in the panel, run ulx adduser "YourName" superadmin.
3. In game, type !menu in chat to open the admin menu.

Running the command from the panel console avoids the situation where nobody has admin yet and so nobody can grant it.

5. If admin does not work

• Check the addon folders are directly inside garrysmod/addons and not wrapped in an extra folder.
• Check the console during boot for Lua errors from the addon.
• Some gamemodes ship their own admin system that overrides ULX. Read the gamemode's documentation before mixing them.

Open a ticket from Support in the Client Area with the console output if the addons load and admin is still refused.
