How to Fix Vein Server Settings That Do Not Apply

Vein reads two config files and silently ignores anything it does not recognise, so a settings problem looks like the server refusing to obey you.

1. The setting is in the wrong file

• game.ini holds the server identity: name, password, player limit, public flag and the admin lists.
• Engine.ini holds the gameplay console variable overrides.

Both are in Vein/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/. A gameplay value in game.ini does nothing, and a server name in Engine.ini does nothing.

2. You edited while the server was running

Both files are rewritten on shutdown, overwriting anything changed underneath. Always stop, edit, start.

3. The setting name does not match your version

Vein is in active development and gameplay variable names change. Do not copy a name from an old guide. Load a single player game and run:

PrintAllVeinSettings

That prints every setting with its current value to the log, matching your exact version.

4. The server starts but is unreachable

Check BindAddr in game.ini. Leave it at its default. The server binds correctly on its own, and putting a specific address there produces a server that starts, logs no errors and cannot be reached. This is one of the most common Vein tickets.

Then confirm the game and query ports match the values allocated to your server, shown on the server overview.

5. The server is not in the browser

• bPublic must be True. With it false, the server is hidden but still joinable directly.
• The browser reads the query port, so check that value too.
• Clear the browser filters, which hide empty and password protected servers by default.

Verify a change took effect

The server name is the fastest test. Change it, restart, and look at the browser. If it changed, the file is being read and any remaining problem is a specific key.

Back up before you experiment

Stop the server and download game.ini and Engine.ini from Files. With over a hundred gameplay values available, a known good Engine.ini is worth having.

What to send support

Open a ticket with both config files pasted as text with the passwords removed, and say which setting is being ignored.
