How to Change Your Rust Server Name, Map and World Size

RustUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Rust reads its settings from convars. Some are set once in the server config file, and the ones that define the map are set before the world is generated.

Where the settings live

Open the Files section for your Rust server in the panel and go to:

server/rust/cfg/server.cfg

If the folder is named after something other than rust, that is your server identity. Use whichever identity folder exists.

Name, description and header image

Stop the server first, then edit server.cfg:

server.hostname "My PlayNHost Rust Server"
server.description "Weekly wipe. No offline raiding."
server.url "https://example.com"
server.headerimage "https://example.com/header.jpg"
  • server.headerimage must be a direct link to a 512x256 image, under 200 KB.
  • For a multi line description use \n inside the quotes.

Save the file and start the server.

Map type, size and seed

These three decide what world you get. They must be set before the map is generated:

server.level "Procedural Map"
server.worldsize 4000
server.seed 1337
  • server.level accepts Procedural Map, Barren, HapisIsland, SavasIsland_koth and CraggyIsland.
  • server.worldsize is between 1000 and 6000. 3000 to 4000 suits most player counts. Larger maps need noticeably more memory and take longer to generate.
  • server.seed is any number. The same seed and size always produce the same map.

Changing the size or seed creates a new world. Player buildings on the old map are gone. Take a backup first if you want to keep it.

Player slots

Your slot count comes with your plan and is applied through the MAX_PLAYERS variable on your server's Startup Settings page, reachable from the server overview in the panel. To run more players than your plan includes, upgrade the plan in the billing area and the new value is applied on the next start.

Saving convars set from the console

Anything you type in the live server console is lost on restart unless you write it out. After changing settings from the console, run:

server.writecfg

That flushes the current values to server.cfg and users.cfg.

Applying a wipe

To wipe the map but keep blueprints, stop the server, then delete the .map and .sav files in server/rust/. To wipe blueprints as well, also delete player.blueprints.5.db. Always take a backup before deleting anything.
