How to set up your Mumble server

Mumble and voice serversUpdated Oct 6, 20263 min read

Your Mumble server is created when you order, and it starts with a slot limit set by your plan. A few minutes of setup makes it yours.

Settings to change first

  1. Open your server in the panel and click Settings, then Game Settings.
  2. SuperUser Password. Set a password for Mumble's built-in SuperUser login. This is how you create channels and manage permissions. Letters, numbers, dot, dash and underscore only. Keep it private.
  3. Join Password. Optional. Players must enter it to connect. See How to set a join password.
  4. Server Name and Welcome Message. The name above the channel list and the text new users see in the chat window. Basic HTML such as <br /> for a line break is allowed. See How to change your Mumble server name and welcome message.
  5. Maximum Users is set by your plan and cannot be changed here. To get more slots, move to a bigger plan: How many slots does a voice server need.
  6. Restart the server so the changes apply. See How to start, stop, restart and force-stop your server.

Create your channels

  1. Connect to the server with the Mumble app. See How to connect to your Mumble server.
  2. Log in as SuperUser with the password you set. In the Mumble app, choose Server, then Connect, and use the user name SuperUser.
  3. Right-click the root channel and choose Add to create channels such as a lobby, one per game, and a quiet room.
  4. Right-click a channel and choose Edit to set permissions for groups and users.
