How to Change Your Multi Theft Auto Server Settings

Multi Theft AutoUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Multi Theft Auto keeps its server settings in one XML file. It also lists the resources the server starts with, so this is the file you come back to whenever you add a gamemode.

Open the file

  1. Stop the server.
  2. In the panel open Files and go to:
    mods/deathmatch/mtaserver.conf

The settings that matter

<servername>My PlayNHost MTA Server</servername>
<serverip></serverip>
<serverport>22003</serverport>
<httpport>22005</httpport>
<maxplayers>32</maxplayers>
<password></password>
<ase>1</ase>
<donotbroadcastlan>0</donotbroadcastlan>
<minclientversion></minclientversion>
<httpdownloadurl></httpdownloadurl>
  • servername is what shows in the browser.
  • password empty is an open server.
  • ase set to 1 is what advertises the server to the master list. Set to 0 the server is invisible but still joinable by IP.
  • Leave serverip empty. The server binds to all addresses, and putting an address here is a common cause of a server that starts but cannot be reached.
  • serverport and httpport must match the ports allocated to your server, shown on the server overview.

Slots

Your plan's slot count is applied through the MAX_PLAYERS variable on your server's Startup Settings page, reachable from the server overview. Raising maxplayers in the config alone does not add slots. Upgrade the plan in the billing area to run more players.

Which resources start

Further down the same file is the resource list:

<resource src="admin" startup="1" protected="0"/>
<resource src="webadmin" startup="1" protected="0"/>
<resource src="play" startup="1" protected="0"/>
<resource src="mygamemode" startup="1" protected="0"/>
  • startup="1" starts the resource when the server boots.
  • protected="0" allows the resource to be stopped from in game.
  • Order matters when one resource depends on another.

Apply the changes

Save the file and start the server. Read the panel console, which reports each resource starting and names any that fail, along with the reason.

Changing settings live

Some settings can be changed from the panel console without a restart, for example:

set gamespeed 1
setpassword yourpassword

Live changes are not written back to mtaserver.conf, so make the permanent change in the file as well.
