How to become an admin on your Left 4 Dead 2 server

Rcon is built in and controls the server. SourceMod adds an in game admin menu, and on Left 4 Dead 2 it is also what most quality of life plugins need.

1. Set the rcon password

1. Stop the server and open left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg in the Files tab.
2. Set rcon_password "a-long-secret".
3. Save and start the server.

2. Use rcon

1. Join the server and open the console.
2. Run rcon_password a-long-secret.
3. Then use commands with the rcon prefix, such as rcon status, rcon changelevel c2m1_highway or rcon kick "PlayerName".

The Console tab in the Game Panel runs the same commands with no prefix and no password.

3. Install SourceMod

1. Stop the server.
2. Download the Linux builds of MetaMod:Source and SourceMod for Left 4 Dead 2.
3. Upload both into left4dead2, giving you left4dead2/addons/metamod and left4dead2/addons/sourcemod.
4. Start the server and run meta list and sm plugins list in the console.

4. Add yourself as an admin

1. Run status in the console while connected and copy your Steam ID.
2. Stop the server and open left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini.
3. Add a line such as "STEAM_1:1:12345678" "99:z".
4. Start the server and type sm_admin in chat to open the menu.

5. If admin does not work

• Match the Steam ID format exactly as status prints it.
• Restart the server after editing the file.
• Confirm SourceMod is loaded before blaming the file.

Open a ticket from Support in the Client Area with the console output if it is still refused.
