Astroneer server players cannot connect

AstroneerUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Astroneer connection problems come down to a short list. Check them in this order.

1. PublicIP does not match your server

This is the most common cause of a timeout on a server that is clearly running.

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Open AstroServerSettings.ini in the config folder under Astro/Saved/Config/.
  3. Set PublicIP to the IP address shown for your service in the panel.
  4. Save and start the server.

2. The address is being typed wrong

  • The client needs IP:Port together, with no spaces.
  • The port must be the one in your panel, not the default 8777, unless they match.
  • A hostname with a typo fails silently and looks like the server is down.

3. Version mismatch after an update

Steam updates the client on your players' PCs on its own. Restart the server from the panel so it picks up the same update, and wait for the console to finish before trying again.

4. The server shut itself down

MaxServerIdleTimeout stops the server after that many seconds with nobody connected. If your server keeps going offline on its own, set it to 0 and restart.

5. The world is empty when you finally join

The server is loading a different save. Check ActiveSaveFileDescriptiveName against the file names in Astro/Saved/SaveGames. Nothing has been lost, the server is simply pointed at a new world. See the saves guide in this category.

6. Settings keep reverting

Astroneer writes its config file when it shuts down. Any edit made while it is running is overwritten. Stop the server, edit, save, then start.

If none of this fixes it, open a ticket from Support in the Client Area with your IP, port, the value of PublicIP and the exact error your players see.
