How to Connect to Your Sons of the Forest Server

Sons of the ForestUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Sons of the Forest servers are found through the in-game browser. The game uses three ports, a game port, a query port and a blob sync port, and only the server owner ever needs to know about the last two.

Find your server details

Open your server at https://panel.playnhost.com. The overview shows the IP and the ports assigned to SERVER_PORT, QUERY_PORT and BLOBSYNC_PORT.

Join the server

  1. Launch Sons of the Forest and choose Multiplayer.
  2. Select Join Game.
  3. Switch the filter to Dedicated and clear the rest, particularly the option that hides password protected servers.
  4. Search for your server name.
  5. Select the server and join, entering the password if one is set.

Add it to Steam favourites

  1. In Steam, open View, then Game Servers.
  2. On the Favorites tab click Add a Server.
  3. Enter IP:PORT using the QUERY_PORT value.

The server then appears reliably under the favourites filter in game, which is more dependable than searching the full list.

The first start takes a while

A new server generates its world before it accepts anyone. Watch the panel console rather than the browser, and give it several minutes.

If you cannot connect

  • Check the panel console for the server reporting it is ready.
  • A version mismatch after a game update hides the server from updated clients. Restart it so it pulls the new build.
  • If the server is visible but the join hangs, the blob sync port is how the world data is transferred to your client. Confirm the port assignments on the server overview have not been changed by hand.
