How to Back Up and Restore a Return to Moria World

A Return to Moria server that comes back with an empty world has usually not lost anything. The save is still on disk and the server is looking for a different one.

1. Check the world name

In MoriaServerConfig.ini, the world name selects which world loads. If the named world does not exist, the server creates a new one. A typo, a change of capitalisation or an accidental edit is enough.

1. Stop the server.
2. Open the config in Files and set the world name back to the original, spelled exactly.
3. Start the server.

2. Use the optional world file name

If you have two worlds with the same display name, or you do not know which name matches which save, set the optional world file name instead. That selects the actual .sav file rather than the display name, which removes the ambiguity.

Browse the save folder in Files and compare file sizes and modified dates to work out which save is the one you want.

3. Check the config was not overwritten

The server rewrites its config on shutdown. If you edited while it was running, your change was lost. Always stop, edit, start.

Take a backup

1. Stop the server and wait for it to report offline, so the world is fully written.
2. In Files, download the save files and MoriaServerConfig.ini.

Do this before a game update, before changing the world name, and before any settings experiment.

Restore a world

1. Stop the server.
2. Upload the save file back into the save folder.
3. Set the world name, or the optional world file name, to match it.
4. Start the server and watch the console as it loads.

Where to look for the reason

Return to Moria writes logs to:

Moria/Saved/Logs/

Read the most recent log alongside the panel console. Between them they name the world the server tried to load and what it did instead.

What to send support

Open a ticket with the world name you expect, a listing of the save folder, and the last hundred lines of the console from the start where the world went missing.
