How to change your Empyrion server name, password and slots

Empyrion: Galactic SurvivalUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Empyrion is configured with dedicated.yaml in the root of your server. It is a YAML file, so indentation matters and tabs are not allowed.

1. Open the file

  1. Stop the server in the Game Panel.
  2. Open the Files tab and click dedicated.yaml.

2. ServerConfig section

SettingWhat it does
Srv_NameThe name in the server list.
Srv_DescriptionOne line under the name.
Srv_PasswordPassword to join. Empty means open.
Srv_MaxPlayersPlayer slots.
Srv_PublicWhether the server is listed publicly.
Srv_PortAlready set to your allocation. Do not change it.
SaveDirectoryWhere saves are kept.
AdminConfigFileThe admin list file, normally adminconfig.yaml.

3. GameConfig section

SettingWhat it does
GameNameThe name of the save. A new value starts a new game.
ModeSurvival or creative.
SeedThe galaxy seed, used only when the game is first created.
CustomScenarioThe scenario folder to run. Empty means the default game.

4. Save and restart

  1. Save the file. Keep the indentation exactly as it was, using spaces only.
  2. Start the server and read the console for the name and game it loaded.

5. Starting a fresh galaxy

Change GameName to a value that has not been used. The server creates a new save and leaves the old one in the save directory, so switching back is just a matter of putting the old name back. Changing Seed alone does nothing to a galaxy that already exists.

If the server refuses to start after an edit, the YAML is almost certainly the problem. A tab character or a wrong indent stops the file loading, and the console names the line.
