How to Become an Admin on Your Vein Server

Vein has two admin levels, both set as Steam ID lists in game.ini. Once you are on a list, the game gives you an admin menu in world.

Find your SteamID64

You need the 17 digit number beginning 7656119, not your display name. Read it from your Steam profile URL or use a SteamID lookup site.

Add yourself

1. Stop the server. The config is rewritten on shutdown, so editing while it runs loses the change.
2. In the panel open Files and edit game.ini in:

   Vein/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/

3. Add your ID to the level you want:

   SuperAdminSteamIDs=76561198000000000
   AdminSteamIDs=76561198000000001

   For several people at the same level, add each on its own line using the + prefix form the file already uses.
4. Save and start the server.

• Super admin has everything, including server settings. Keep this to yourself.
• Admin is the level for your moderators.

Open the admin menu

1. Join the server.
2. Press the backslash key to open the admin menu.
3. The menu has a Config section where you can change server settings live, without editing files.

The Config section is the practical way to tune a running server, because it avoids the stop, edit, start cycle for every experiment. Once you are happy with a value, put it in the config file so it survives a wipe of the settings.

What the admin menu covers

• Player list, with kick and ban.
• Teleporting, for dealing with a report.
• Spawning items and vehicles.
• Live gameplay settings.
• Time and weather.

The panel console

The Console section for your server is attached to the server process and shows joins, leaves and errors. Read it alongside the admin menu when something does not behave as expected.

If admin does not apply

• The server must be restarted after the edit.
• Check the SteamID64 for typos. Vein does not report a bad ID.
• Confirm you added the ID to the right key, and that each entry is on its own line.
• If your change vanished, you edited while the server was running.
