How to change your Killing Floor 2 server name, password and difficulty

Killing Floor 2Updated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Killing Floor 2 keeps its configuration in the KFGame/Config folder. The files are prefixed with the platform, so on a Linux build you are looking for names beginning LinuxServer-.

1. Open the config folder

  1. Stop the server in the Game Panel and wait for it to report offline. Killing Floor 2 writes its config on shutdown, so edits made while it runs are lost.
  2. Open the Files tab and browse to KFGame/Config.

2. Server name and passwords

  • In the KFGame config file, find the ServerName line and set your name.
  • Under [Engine.AccessControl], set AdminPassword for admin access.
  • In the same section, GamePassword sets the password players need to join.

Keep the two passwords different.

3. Game mode, difficulty and length

These are chosen when the server launches, so they live on the Startup page of your server. That page is not linked in the sidebar, so open your server in the panel and add /startup to the end of the address.

  • The mode decides survival, weekly or versus.
  • Difficulty runs from normal up to hell on earth.
  • Length sets short, medium or long wave counts.
  • The starting map is set here too.

4. Save and restart

  1. Save the files you changed.
  2. Start the server and read the console for the map and mode it loaded.

5. If a setting reverts

  • You edited while the server was running. Stop it first, every time.
  • You edited the config for the wrong platform. Check the file name prefix matches the build your server runs.
  • Some values are also set at launch, and those win over the file. Change them on the Startup page instead.

Open a ticket from Support in the Client Area with the setting name and the value you want if it will not hold.
