How to change your Eco server name, password and player limit

EcoUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

Eco keeps its settings in a Configs folder, with one file per area. The server identity is in Network.eco.

1. Open the file

  1. Stop the server in the Game Panel and wait for it to report offline. Eco rewrites its config files on shutdown, so edits made while it runs are lost.
  2. Open the Files tab and go to the Configs folder.
  3. Open Network.eco. It is a JSON style file, so keep the quotation marks and commas intact.

2. The settings you will change

SettingWhat it does
DescriptionThe server name and blurb shown in the browser.
DetailedDescriptionThe longer text on the server page.
PasswordPassword to join. Empty means open.
MaxConnectionsPlayer slots.
PublicServerWhether the server is advertised publicly.
WebServerPortThe web interface port. Leave it as it is.
GameServerPortThe game port. Already set to your allocation, so leave it alone.

3. World and difficulty settings

These are in other files in the same folder. Difficulty.eco holds the difficulty settings, and the world generation settings apply only when a world is created. Changing world size or seed does nothing to a world that already exists.

4. Save and restart

  1. Save the file.
  2. Start the server and read the console for the name it registered.

5. Whitelisting

Eco's whitelist only takes effect when a password is set. If you want a whitelist only server, set a password as well and give it to nobody. Whitelisted players skip the password prompt.

If a setting does not apply, check the file is still valid after your edit. A missing comma or quotation mark makes Eco fall back to defaults for the whole file.
