How to Configure Your RimWorld Together Server

RimWorld TogetherUpdated Sep 24, 20263 min read

RimWorld Together keeps its settings in a folder of small JSON files, each with one job. That makes it easy to find what you want, once you know which file owns it.

Where the files live

In the panel open Files and go to the Config folder beside the server executable:

  • ServerConfig.json, the server name, description, port and player limit.
  • BackupConfig.json, the rolling backup settings.
  • ChatConfig.json, the message of the day and the join and leave notices.
  • Separate files for the mod list, the whitelist, the storyteller, the difficulty and the scenario.

Stop the server before editing. The files are written back on shutdown.

ServerConfig.json

This holds the basics: the name and description shown to players, the port, and the maximum number of connected players. Do not change the port away from the value allocated to your server, shown on the server overview.

The same file carries the admin player name field, which is one of the two ways to grant admin. See our guide on becoming an admin.

Backups

BackupConfig.json controls the rolling backups the server takes of the shared world. This is worth setting up properly before you invite anyone, because a RimWorld colony represents a lot of hours and the shared world touches everyone at once.

Backups written by the server still live on the server. Download a copy from Files periodically so you have one somewhere else.

Chat and the message of the day

ChatConfig.json sets the message players see when they join and the notices posted when someone connects or disconnects. Put your rules and your restart schedule in the message of the day.

Storyteller, difficulty and scenario

These have their own files and apply to the shared world. Changing them mid game affects everyone. An admin can also change them from inside the game once the world exists, which is usually the safer route.

Slots

Your plan's slot count is applied through the MAX_PLAYERS variable on your server's Startup Settings page, reachable from the server overview. Raising the limit in ServerConfig.json alone does not add slots. Upgrade the plan in the billing area to run more players.

Apply and verify

Save, start the server, and read the panel console. These are JSON files, so a missing comma or brace stops the server loading, and the console names the file.
