How to install mods on your Barotrauma server

Barotrauma mods are content packages. A dedicated server needs the package files on disk and the package enabled in its config, and your players need the same packages enabled on their side.

1. Get the mod files

1. Subscribe to the mod in the Steam Workshop on your own PC and let it download.
2. Open the game's workshop content folder and find the folder for that mod. It contains a filelist.xml.
3. That folder is what you upload.

2. Upload to the server

1. Stop the server in the Game Panel.
2. Open the Files tab and upload the mod folder into the server's local mods folder, keeping the folder structure intact.
3. Use SFTP for large packages rather than the browser upload.

3. Enable the package

1. Open the server's player config file, the one holding the list of content packages.
2. Add an entry for the new package alongside the vanilla one. The core package stays where it is, mods are added as regular packages.
3. Save and start the server.
4. The Console lists the packages it loaded during boot. If yours is missing, the path in the entry does not match where the files actually are.

4. Custom submarines

Submarines are simpler. Upload the .sub file into the submarines folder on the server while it is stopped, then start the server and select the submarine in the server settings in game. Every player needs the same submarine file, and the server will offer it to clients that do not have it.

5. Match your players

• Everyone subscribes to the same workshop items and enables them in the game's mod menu before joining.
• The order of packages matters when two mods change the same content.
• After a workshop update, everyone updates, including the server files.

Add one mod at a time and start the server in between. A server that will not boot after five new packages tells you nothing about which one broke it.
